Add The California Post on Google Astronomers at Caltech captured mind-blowing footage of a supermassive black hole spewing a jet of plasma straight toward Earth.
The school’s astrophysicists released a high-resolution video of plasma coming out of a black hole millions of light-years away.
Video shows two different views of “blazar 3C 345” that is located around 5.5 billion light-years away from Earth in the northern constellation of Hercules. 27 years of telescope measurements were combined into the making of the video.
One view shows how the jet of plasma would look like if filmed normally versus “kine.” Kine is a new video-reconstruction algorithm that weaves images into a detailed way.
Before this new technology, researchers were only able to track the overall velocity but now are able to see the different parts of the blazar at different speeds.
A blazar is an active galactic nucleus that is powered by a supermassive black hole whose jet of plasma moves close to the speed of light and is pointed in a direction toward Earth.
“We are all very excited by the amount of resolution and contrast that we can get thanks to our new algorithm… Especially because usually in astrophysics, to get better images, you have to wait for the next generation of telescope with better lenses or better sensors,” lead researcher Dr. Marianna Foschi told KCRA 3.
“But in this case thanks to our algorithm we get this basically for free,” she added on.
Foschi is the lead researcher of a scientific journal breaking down how kine was built using neural fields. The journal also talks about the 116 observations that were recoded of “blazar 3C 345” from 1995 to 2022.
