They lost their starting quarterback, Jaxson Dart, to a knee injury, and standouts at offensive tackle (Andrew Thomas) and defensive end (Brian Burns) also suffered minor injuries. They were humbled by everyone’s Super Bowl favorite, the Rams, in Los Angeles, losing 28-6.
Optimism turned to this harsh reality: The retooling under new coach John Harbaugh is only beginning. As impressive as the Week 1 win over the Cowboys may have been, the follow-up produced a major step back against a far better opponent.
