Add The New York Post on Google A great white shark was caught on camera devouring a helpless seal in Nantucket – turning a peaceful beach into a bloody mess.
The brutal attack was captured by Carrie Drayton as she and her boyfriend drove past Great Point Beach around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday and noticed a seal rushing out of the water, Boston.com reported.
Soon after, the couple saw shark fins and it became immediately apparent the seal was in trouble.
Gory video shows the final moments and bloody aftermath of the attack, as the massive predator is seen tearing at what’s left of the poor seal – only feet away from the seashore.
“It was truly wild. I could have reached out and touched it,” Drayton said.
Another seal deeper inland looks helplessly on, before trying to make its way closer to the ocean, the footage shows.
“Stay out of the water, dude. You’re gonna get it,” Drayton is heard calling out to the other seal.
The attack was something Drayton, a lifelong Nantucket resident, had never seen before, saying she’d “probably have a greater chance of winning the lottery.”
Experts told Boston.com that despite the shark’s bloody display so close to land, its behavior is nothing to be alarmed about.
Sharks typically pass through Nantucket as they migrate, they said, and the seals at Great Point are a “viable source of food,” fisheries scientist Gregory Skomal said.
