Add The California Post on Google The baseball world was devastated to hear Sunday’s announcement that legendary San Francisco Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper has been diagnosed with throat cancer.
Kuiper has been part of a broadcasting tandem with Mike Krukow for 36 years. Krukow revealed in August that he would be retiring after the Giants’ 2026 season, largely due to the degenerative muscle disease body myositis, which he has been battling for two decades.
Krukow spoke with the San Francisco Chronicle about his impending retirement and made a concerning update about his current health status.
“Because you lose these muscles, you’re susceptible to falls — and you have to avoid falls at all costs. The more I ride in this chair, the more I atrophy and the less I can walk. Now it’s gotten to the point where it’s hard to do everything and it isn’t going to get any better. I have problems swallowing now, I have to be really careful when I eat. It’s the nature of the game,” Krukow told the outlet.
Hearing Krukow talk about problems swallowing raises red flags, especially in the wake of his partner in crime’s cancer diagnosis. But these swallowing issues are a byproduct of Krukow’s body myositis and isn’t indicative of a cancer concern.
Still, it’s tough for Giants fans to hear about these health issues with their beloved longtime broadcasting duo.
