After leaving Ole Miss for LSU late last season, the 51-year-old head coach returns to Oxford, MS’s Vaught-Hemingway Stadium tonight for a high-profile matchup between the two elite clubs.
Coming into the matchup, Kiffin’s visiting Tigers are ranked No. 7 by the AP Top 25 following convincing 30+-point victories over Clemson and LA Tech in the first two weeks of the season with transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt at the helm.
They’ll face their first real test today against Trinidad Chambliss’ No. 8 Rebels who also won their first two contests, including a thrilling 41-38 barnburner against No. 23-ranked Louisville.
Oddsmakers believe LSU has a 2.5 to three-point advantage tonight but the rowdy crowd might be a major factor- additional security has been called in due to the hostile nature between the two clubs.
“I guess there’s real safety issues and stuff, so there’s people that have a plan for that,” Kiffin said. “I told the players today, ‘Man, you don’t have anything to worry about as far as, like, attention on you all week and everything. There’s going to be so much attention, hatred, everything on me. You just get to go play.'”
