My favorite was a crew-cutted defensive lineman named Jim Katcavage. No. 75. That was before there were “edge rushers,” back when you tried to reach the quarterback any way and from anywhere you could.
The voices were Chris Schenkel on CBS TV, Marty Glickman and Al Derogatis on WNEW-AM radio. They didn’t talk or holler more than they naturally saw fit. I still hear — and almost see — field goal attempts spiced with Glickman’s, “It’s high enough! … It’s long enough! … ” anticipations.
They’d use antiquated terms such as “fumble” rather than “he put it on the ground,” and give the yards gained after a “first down” instead of the stylish modern-vague “they move the chains.” And they didn’t refer to teams as “cultures.” Imagine that.
