The original Outlander show might have come to an end last spring, leaving audiences with their final look at Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), but the Outlander saga is far from over. Outlander: Blood of My Blood deepens the lore of the super popular series by exploring what happened to Claire’s parents — Julia (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) — after they traveled through the Stones at Craigh na Dun and wound up in the 1710s. There, they not only find themselves wrapped up in their own star-crossed adventure, but they also run into and affect the lives of Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy).

Outlander: Blood of My Blood is a spin-off of the original Starz series Outlander created by long-time Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts.
While it’s true that Outlander author Diana Gabaldon is working on books about Jamie’s parents, Outlander: Blood of My Blood comes with a twist we won’t find in her novels. Roberts came up with the idea that maybe — just maybe — Claire’s parents didn’t die in a car crash when she was six years old. Instead, they traveled, like her, through the stones to a version of Scotland roughly 200 years in the past.
So while we get to see a fairly accurate depiction of Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser’s forbidden romance play out in 18th century Scotland, we also get to learn how Claire’s parents fell in love during World War I only to be separated on their own fraught journeys back in time. Henry finds himself roped into being a bladier (or lawyer) for the imperious Grant family, while a pregnant Julia must seduce the vile Lord Lovat (Tony Curran) to ensure she and her baby can survive the unforgiving time period. Since Brian Fraser is Lovat’s bastard son, Julia gets roped into his and Ellen’s love story.
Blood of My Blood Season 1 opens with Ellen MacKenzie mourning the death of her beloved father, the powerful laird “Red Jacob” MacKenzie (Peter Mullan). Red Jacob’s sudden passing thrusts Clan MacKenzie into a succession crisis because Ellen may be both the eldest and her father’s truest heir, but she can’t inherit the title because she’s a woman. Her younger brothers — clever, but physically disabled Colum (Séamus McLean Ross) and strong, but brash Dougal (Sam Retford) — want to fight for the honor, but face a serious threat from outsider James MacKinney (Ryan Fletcher). Ellen eventually works out a plan where her brothers will split leadership. Colum is the laird, but Dougal is war chieftain. This is the tense, but ultimately (mostly) successful set up Claire discovers when she arrives at Castle Leoch a generation later.
Meanwhile, Malcolm Grant (Jhon Lumsden), the heir apparent to the wealthiest clan is set on making Ellen his wife. Tough cookies, though, because Ellen falls in love at first sight with her soulmate (and Jamie Fraser’s daddy), Brian. Ellen reluctantly agrees to marry Malcolm, all the while she secretly handfasts herself to Brian. Colum hires assassins (known as Gallowglass) to murder Brian, but he kills them. Ultimately, Ellen runs away from her own wedding — forcing the families to wed Malcolm’s sister Maura (Bobby Rainsbury) to Dougal — to be with Brian. A drunk Malcolm confronts the lovers as they flee and baits Brian into a fight. Malcolm dies, and Brian and Ellen go into hiding with Murtagh (Rory Alexander). However, when the season ends with a new Jacobite Rebellion uprising, the lovers know that they must play their parts in the war ahead before they can be happily ever after.
While all this (and more) is going down, Claire’s parents struggle to accept their new realities in 1714. Julia is sold into service to Lovat and uses his lust to coerce him into a marriage to protect her baby, William (whom Lovat calls Simon and believes is fated to become king). Henry is told by eventual Outlander Season 7 baddie Arch Bug (Terence Rae) that Julia died in childbirth. Overcome with grief and PTSD, he finds comfort in the arms of sex worker Seema (Lauren McQueen), believing she is Julia.
Eventually, though, Claire’s mom and dad reunite and hatch a plan to escape to the stones with baby William. They stage an abduction from Leathers and get to the stones — only for Arch Bug and his heavies to catch up. They keep trying to travel back to Claire’s timeline, but it’s not working. The season ends with them reaching for the stones as Arch Bug attacks.
Anything else? Oh! There’s an unrequited love line between Ellen’s married sister Jocasta (Sadhbh Malin) who loves Murtagh, and Murtagh who loves Ellen, who obviously loves Brian. The effects of this are still felt decades later in the original Outlander series.
