Other franchises have embarrassing events. But why are the Mets addicted to them? Why is it the distinguishing feature of a franchise at 40 years and counting since its second and last championship? Why can’t they get out of this quicksand of circular firing squads and inability to sustain winning — really, how can the playoffs keep expanding and a New York team in its 65th season have reached them just 11 times while never being in them three straight years?
