Chargers’ Ladd McConkey injury concerns further fueled by Marquez Valdes-Scantling workout

Add The California Post on Google It’s only been one week into the NFL season, and the Los Angeles Chargers might have a hole at the wide receiver position.

Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey’s status for Week 2 remains up in the air as he is considered “day to day,” leaving the team with a need to address the position.

According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Chargers brought in former two-time Super Bowl champion Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a workout Tuesday — indicating that McConkey could be unavailable in Sunday’s matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Valdes-Scantling, 31, an eight-year veteran who helped the Kansas City Chiefs win back-to-back Super Bowls in 2022 and 2023, would be a deep-threat wide receiver that the Chargers will desperately need.

On Monday, it was revealed that McConkey was dealing with a rib injury after he exited Sunday’s game in the third quarter, following a brutal hit to the chest area.

Valdes-Scantling has spent the last five months trying to earn a spot on the Dallas Cowboys roster, but he wound up being released by the team during the final round of cuts at the end of training camp.

His time on the field was limited with the Cowboys as he was dealing with a knee injury during training camp. When he appeared in games, he had 3 receptions for 45 yards on 5 targets.

Valdes-Scantling was originally drafted as a fifth-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2018 and has had a productive career, with 21 touchdowns, 3,686 yards and 219 receptions in his career.

During Super Bowl 58, he had a moment to remember by hauling in a 16-yard reception by Patrick Mahomes in the third quarter to give the Chiefs a 13–10 lead, which would eventually lead to a 25–22 overtime victory against the San Francisco 49ers.
