While on the desk for ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” ahead of the Chiefs-Broncos game, Scott Van Pelt brought up that it would be Travis Kelce’s first game as a married man after tying the knot with Taylor Swift at Madison Square Garden on July 3.
Van Pelt and Pat McAfee both attended what the former called a “magical” event, and Kelce was quick to call out his fellow analyst that did not accept the invitiation.
“There was another person on the desk invited, but he did no-show us,” Kelce said as he turned to face Marcus Spears sitting beside him. “Still don’t really know why.”
“That’s on me. Family obligation with my son, who you know he got a lot of stuff going on,” replied the former Cowboys defensive end with a big laugh.
“Hook him. Hook him,” Van Pelt encouraged Kelce.
“[There were] so many awesome people, obvioiusly, all walks of life — football world, celebrity world, singers from Nashville, actors, actresses, people we grew up with in Cleveland Heights, a melting pot of individuals. It was insane,” Kelce said before mentioning Adam Sandler officiated the wedding.
“From then on, it was a party there. It was so good seeing everybody out there. All the people that sang. All the people dancing. The games, it was very funny.”
Van Pelt agreed, saying he has “never seen a group of people quite like that.”
“I don’t care who you were on the A list, there was somebody in that room that they were fired up to see and everybody was remarkably cool,” he said.
The three analysts went on to recall some of their favorite moments from the bash while also sticking to the secrecy the bride and groom requested. The 1,000-plus guests were under a strict no phone policy throughout the evening.
Van Pelt went on to shout out Brad Pitt who he claimed as his “new best friend” before questioning if it was McAfee’s bestie.
“I think he was all of our best friend, which is why he is Brad Pitt.,” McAfee answered.
“I think everybody from the wedding has said some version of a Brad Pitt moment,” Kelce quipped.
McAfee didn’t stop bringing up that Kelce wore a cape at some point during the wedding, which he said was “sweet” and “great to see.” The host also made some predictions for the Chiefs season while at the event.
“But what I saw there Patrick Mahomes was dancing in the middle of the dance floor. I think I noticed that night that Patrick might come back early actually,” McAfee said.
“That was your first inclination?” Kelce asked.
“Yeah, I was like ‘Hey, he’s dancing his ass off. What four, five hours he got out there dancing and the entire Chiefs team was together. That felt like a real unified bunch. I love what I saw from a scouting department at that wedding,” he went on and garnered a lot of laughs.
“So, it was a work trip?” Van Pelt said. “It was a work trip for McAfee. I like it.”
The Chiefs went on to beat the Broncos 31-10 on “Monday Night Football” and Travis Kelce had three receptions for 71 yards, which included a big 59-yard gain to move the Chiefs to the Broncos’ 4-yard line.
Mahomes also had a steller night, throwing 184 yards for two touchdowns and one interception. He also had a rushing touchdown of his own off of a 15-yard run.
