Add The California Post on Google The Los Angeles Rams didn’t look like a Super Bowl contender in their season opener.
The Rams, who were dubbed as the favorites to hoist the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the season, looked mediocre in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers.
Head coach Sean McVay was out-coached. Quarterback Matthew Stafford played poorly. Reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett was nowhere to be found, recording zeros across the board in his Rams debut.
And Aaron Donald was watching the Australia showdown from LA.
The result? The 49ers handed the Super Bowl favorites a 27-7 beatdown in their season opener.
NFL analyst Danny Parkins shared what surprised him the most about the Rams’ lackluster performance Thursday.
“I think the most surprising thing about the whole thing is seven points. The Rams scored seven points in a football game,” Parkins said on First Things First.
“I just could not stop thinking about the ineptitude of the Rams offense.”
It was the Rams’ largest loss in 38 games. It was the fewest points scored in a Stafford start in 84 games. Stafford posted the lowest passer rating he’s had in 70 games and it was the first time in 18 games that he recorded zero touchdowns.
The notion that Week 1 lies remains true, but the Rams certainly didn’t set the tone for what was poised to be an electric season with their disappointing performance in Melbourne.
