Mariah Carey ditched her diamonds for distressed denim on a New York City outing Thursday, smiling for photographers as she left the Peninsula hotel’s rooftop bar.
The “Honey” hitmaker, 57, styled Acne Studios’ $850 baggy jeans — “finished with hand-applied paint and stain marks for an authentic dirty effect” — with the Swedish brand’s layered mesh tee ($580), its front scrawled with Sharpie-like doodles.
The accessories were more familiar territory for the queen of glam: Gucci oval-frame sunglasses ($430) and Hermès platform slip-on sandals ($1,000).
Waist-length honey-colored curls, glossy lips and a metallic manicure and pedicure rounded out the ensemble.
Carey isn’t the only songstress to try the scruffy jeans on for size. Jennifer Lopez wore an identical pair during an April 2024 walk around New York, back when they cost $620.
Given the two pop stars’ history, it’s likely the homage was accidental. Carey famously told a German interviewer “I don’t know her” when asked about Lopez in 2003, and doubled down on the sentiment last October on “Watch What Happens Live.”
“How could I suddenly know [her], you know?” she quipped to Andy Cohen.
Thursday’s dressed-down detour was an outlier in an otherwise typically glossy week. On Tuesday, Carey cut a more familiar figure in a Gucci logo minidress and high-heeled suede boots, changing into a $4,500 Louis Vuitton fit-and-flare dress and $2,300 canvas Gucci boots — again covered in the brand’s double-Gs — for dinner at Midtown staple Il Tinello.
The outings come ahead of the Oct. 30 release of her “Glitter” 25th anniversary reissue — the 2001 soundtrack’s first vinyl pressing since its original release, with previously unheard vault recordings included.
The album initially flopped alongside its critically maligned film, only to be reclaimed by fans in the years since as an underrated deep cut.
