Rail operator working closely with police and Travel Industry Authority to gather evidence for further follow-up and possible prosecution
1-MIN READ1-MINWynna WongPublished: 8:16pm, 10 Sep 2026Hong Kong police have identified a tour guide suspected of helping members of a travel group evade fares at an MTR station last month, the city’s rail operator has said, warning that anyone found in breach of the rules could face prosecution.
The MTR Corporation said on Thursday that police had identified the guide involved in the incident at Tsim Sha Tsui station, and that it was working closely with the force and the Travel Industry Authority to gather evidence and information for further follow-up and possible prosecution.
The operator said it “strongly condemned” fare evasion and stressed that passengers who failed to pay the correct fare or otherwise evaded payment could face a surcharge or prosecution under MTR by-laws.
The incident took place at about 11pm on August 23, when a tour guide was suspected of helping fellow members of a travel group improperly exit Tsim Sha Tsui station, with several passengers allegedly failing to pay the correct fares.
More than 30 people are estimated to have passed through without tapping their own cards.
