The Cowboys’ owner indicated he has an eye toward adding a player to help his team’s chances after freeing up more than $19 million in cap space with recent contract restructurings, according to ESPN.
Dallas reworked the deals of defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland and tight end Jake Ferguson last week.

Getty Images “It certainly can be used for this year’s team and the timing is pretty conspicuously obvious,” Jones said on “Shan & RJ” on 105.3 in Texas on Tuesday morning. “That does show that we have really viable serious room financially to make a trade if we wanted to right now.”
Impact players are not remaining in free agency with the season five days away for 26 teams — including the Cowboys — but they now have the cap space for a potential marquee player via trade.
The Cowboys now have $33.6 million in cap space that can be rolled over to 2027 if needed, according to the NFL Players Association.
Jones is high on this team, though, and he usually is one to go for it rather than wait for the future.
He said earlier in camp he had been having trade talks, and clarified Tuesday that Dallas is “not timing wise right on something this morning or this week but if you look at it general speaking, we’re in play.”
That means John Harbaugh and the Giants don’t have to worry about seeing any newcomers for the “Sunday Night Football” clash at MetLife Stadium, but perhaps the Commanders will for Week 2.

The Cowboys allowed a league-high 30.1 points per game last year.
Dallas did recently acquire offensive lineman Broderick James from the Steelers for a seventh-round pick.
“When you look at all of that, you probably could see more than likely depth on defense but defense would be the place,” Jones said.
The Cowboys are coming off two losing seasons and having not won a playoff game since 2022 when they ended Tom Brady’s career in the Wild Card round.
“We’ve got a side of the ball on our offense that’s really, really promising,” Jones said during his segment. “We sure are going to improve on defense.”
