2-MIN READ2-MIN ListenTheodora YuPublished: 10:13pm, 6 Sep 2026Hong Kong authorities will review a new reservation system for a Sai Kung trail famed for its dramatic volcanic rock columns after the National Day “golden week” in October, following large numbers of no-shows during the first two trial runs.
Only 1,560 registered and walk-in patrons arrived at Po Pin Chau on Saturday and Sunday, despite 3,230 people having made bookings under the real-name reservation system.
Lawmakers and a district councillor have called for more on-site quotas, clearer booking status information for walk-ins, and a penalty-points system to curb no-shows.
In a response to the South China Morning Post Sunday, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said it would step up visitor management, patrols and enforcement around the East Dam and Po Pin Chau area, while continuing publicity and educational efforts, including reminders to book in advance.
“The department will conduct a comprehensive review of the effectiveness [of the trial] after the National Day golden week to assist in formulating long-term countryside management strategies,” a spokesman said.
Golden week refers to either of the two week-long holidays in mainland China around National Day on October 1, and the Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival.
