Popular Halloween candy recalled in California over allergen

Add The California Post on Google A quirky Halloween candy has been urgently recalled over a potentially life-threatening ingredient that went unreported.

The FDA sent out a notice this week warning the public Halloween Chocolatey Eyeballs candy contains undeclared milk allergens.

Any person who consumes the product and is allergic to milk may not know they are at risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.

Milk allergies can have symptoms ranging from mild to severe and can include wheezing, vomiting, hives, digestive problems, and can cause anaphylaxis, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The candy is produced by Crystal Temptations of North Arlington, New Jersey, and has been distributed in California, Arizona, Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Indiana, Nevada, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio, and Wyoming.

Consumers in those states may spot the product at stores such as Marshalls, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Sierra Trading Post.

Government officials say the discovery that the product contained milk came when a TJX analyst analyzed the product and found the presence of Whey (Milk). The packaging does not say the product contains milk.

“Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes,” the FDA said.

The candy comes in a variety of packaging ranging from 7 to 16 ounces.

Any person who has purchased the product is urged to destroy it, the FDA said. Any refunds will be handled through Crystal Temptations at 1-201-246-7990, and customers will need to have proof of purchase on hand.
