A one-bedroom apartment in the ritzy Pacific Heights neighborhood has sparked a firestorm online after being teased for a jaw-dropping $5,495 a month — despite what commenters described as a dated kitchen, dingy carpet and a small patio.
Real estate agent Thomas Baboin posted about the upcoming listing for the apartment at 2321 Scott St., pitching it as an “SF Icon” in “Prime Pac Heights.”
“$5,500 for something that hasn’t been updated since ‘Guess who’s coming to Dinner?’ With a prison cell patio?!” one commenter wrote.
Another added: “Almost $6k and no in-unit laundry? These landlords are literal demons.”
The apartment’s carpet took a particularly brutal beating.

One Pacific Heights resident claimed their own one-bedroom costs less than $4,000 and comes with 700 square feet and Bay views.
“I live in PAC Heights in a one bedroom and can tell you that this looks like a 70s renovation with old carpets.
“My place is not even $4,000 and it has views of the bay and 700 sq ft. This is a terrible price and I feel bad for anyone forced to be paying this.”
The listing’s comment section quickly piled up with dozens of reactions, ranging from disbelief to outright fury.
“This has to be the worst apartment for the price I’ve ever seen. Bravo,” one commenter wrote. Another summed up the mood: “$5495 for CARPET??? Nobody wants that.”
The sticker shock comes as San Francisco continues to grapple with some of the nation’s most punishing housing costs.
A recent Zumper analysis found the median one-bedroom rent in the city had climbed to more than $4,000, with limited housing supply and the booming tech sector helping fuel prices.
And apparently, $4,000 is just the starting point.
