Add The New York Post on Google Bryce Harper’s wife, Kayla Harper, was brought to tears while discussing dealing with criticism the Phillies first baseman receives in the couple’s first-ever joint interview.
During Tuesday’s installment of the “Let’s Be Honest” podcast, Kayla, who tends to stay out of the spotlight, gave a rare look into their marriage when host Kristin Cavallari asked what is the hardest thing about being married to a professional athlete.
“It’s not even when people say he sucks, because obviously he doesn’t suck. I think its more when they attack his character and I’m like, ‘That is not him at all,'” Kayla said before wiping her tears.
View this post on Instagram “Why do I get emotional? But yeah, I think that’s hard — when you hear so many people’s opinions about your husband and that’s not the person that he is, or the dad that he is, or the friend that he is, or even the baseball player that he is.
“Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I’m crying. This is so embarrassing. This is why I dont do this stuff.”
Kayla explained that she watched Bryce face public scrutiny since the beginning of his career — and that “it’s hard to keep [my] mouth shut” over opinions of the nine-time MLB All-Star.
“I feel like he’s always had a really tough go at media ever since he was younger. I mean, so many opinions,” she said. “… I lived a relatively normal life so seeing somebody that person you care the most about getting torn apart by everybody who doesn’t know him.
“That’s hard to sit back and not say anything. It’s hard to not get on… [I’ve responded] when I was dumb and young. I’m sassy. I’ve got a lot to say. I’m sarcastic with people. I would pop off in stuff. It doesn’t go anywhere, it’s dumb. It’s hard to keep your mouth shut and just pretend like it’s not happening
“At the end of the day, I know who he is. He’s got his family. It is what it is.”
Bryce added that he “couldn’t care less” what strangers have to say about him.
“I just feel like, not any of those people that are really saying stuff are ever going to be at my Thanksgiving dinner,” he said.
“I’m never going to invite them through my door. My grandma used to say, ‘Opinions are like assholes, everbody’s got one.’
“… I just don’t care. I never have I’ve been going through this since I’m 10 or 11 years old.”
Bryce and Kayla, who met as teenagers, have been married for 16 years and share four children together: Krew Aron, Brooklyn Elizabeth, Kamryn Ray, and Hayes Three.
