Add The California Post on Google Tony Romo is pinning his recent arrest, in part, on the fallout from multiple back surgeries.
The CBS broadcaster said in a lengthy statement on Tuesday that because of all the pain he was in from procedures he underwent as a Dallas Cowboys quarterback, he developed a substance abuse issue that led to him being placed behind bars last month.
“Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant, debilitating pain,” Romo wrote on his Instagram page. “That pain led to a dependance on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.”
Romo was taken into custody on July 23 after authorities in Wisconsin alleged he was driving while impaired after leaving a golf course.
He was issued four citations — one for OWI, one for possessing open intoxicants in a moving vehicle, one for unsafe passing on right, and one for refusing to take test for intoxication after arrest.
Court records show Romo reached a deal with proseuctors on Tuesday to close out the case.
Through his attorney, Romo pleaded no contest to an OWI charge and lost his driving privileges for six months as part of his sentencing.
He was also ordered to pay a $784 fine. Additionally, an ignition interlock device must be installed on his cars for the next year, the records stated.
The other three citations Romo was facing were dismissed following his no contest plea, according to the records.
Romo, who’s been on leave from his CBS role since the run-in with cops, acknowledged the plea in his statement, writing, “I own this completely.”
“As I have taught my three young sons: when you fall short, you stand up and take full responsibility,” Romo said. “That is an important first step.”
The 46-year-old said he’s leaned on his faith, his family and the lessons he’s learned from football to make the next steps.
“I am working closely with a team of doctors to address my health and make the necessary changes,” he said. “I am deeply grateful for the support of my family, my friends, and the NFL community including players, coaches, and owners. Your encouragement has meant more to me than you know.
“As I turn my attention to my health, my family, and, in time, my return to CBS, I kindly ask for privacy during this period.”
