PLA tanker aircraft shows versatility in Egypt exercise, highlighting interoperability that could boost global sales prospects

The YY-20, also referred to as the YU-20, is the aerial-refuelling variant of China’s Y-20 strategic transport aircraft, designed to extend the range and loiter time of receiving aircraft.
China’s J-10C fighter jet showcased at Singapore AirshowThe Rafale appears to be the first Western-made fighter publicly seen receiving fuel from a Chinese tanker after a YY-20A refuelled Egyptian MiG-29 fighters at last year’s Eagles of Civilisation drills, showing the tanker’s ability to refuel both French and Russian-made fighter jets.
The multiplatform demonstrations coincide with a broader effort by Beijing to showcase its long-range power projection. During this year’s exercise, Chinese J-16 fighters completed a 6,000km (3,730-mile) transit to Egypt, relying on YY-20 tankers for aerial refuelling along the way.
According to an official PLA Air Force account, the YY-20A also served as an airborne command node during the deployment – suggesting the tanker could play a wider role in coordinating complex long-distance air operations beyond simply extending the range of combat aircraft.
