Emergency crews and residents stop to commemorate the more than 1,000 dead in last week’s disaster
2-MIN READ2-MIN ListenMeredith ChenPublished: 7:36pm, 1 Sep 2026Residents and rescuers in the Tibet autonomous region paused for three minutes on Tuesday morning to remember the victims of last week’s mudslide disaster.Sirens sounded for three minutes from 9.55am at the Gyirong Port police station, with similar memorials at rescue and road-reopening sites throughout the region, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
As of 2pm on Tuesday, 1,058 bodies had been recovered from the Nepalese side, with 4,606 people missing. Chinese authorities reported 16 confirmed deaths and 546 people missing, in their latest update on Sunday.
The missing include 261 foreign nationals on the Chinese side and more than 500 foreign nationals in Nepal.
