Add The California Post on Google A bizarre police pursuit came to a dramatic stop on a California beach — with startled sunbathers watching as officers swarmed a suspect on the sand.
The strange chase began around 7:21 a.m. Sunday in Pacific Beach, when San Diego cops hunted a gold Nissan Frontier allegedly doing donuts in the parking lot of Ocean Pacific Gym and Wellness.
The driver then took off, leading officers on an unusually slow and erratic pursuit through the area, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Officers deployed spike strips in an effort to bring the vehicle to a stop, but the driver continued toward the coast.
The pursuit finally came to an unexpected end when the suspect drove the Nissan on to the sand near Crystal Pier.
Dozens of beachgoers watched from a distance as officers moved in, with a police K-9 also at the scene.
Video posted to social media captured the tense takedown, showing the shirtless suspect being ordered out of the vehicle before officers directed him to kneel on the sand.
Police said the man was taken into custody at about 8:46 a.m.
He is facing a felony evasion charge, authorities said.
San Diego police have not released the suspect’s name or age.
