After winning the $10 million Tour Championship to close the PGA Tour season, Scottie Scheffler revealed that he wasn’t exactly going to jump into a gold coin-filled pool after the accomplishment.
“Gosh, I don’t know. Probably a cheeseburger. I’m a big cheeseburger guy. Cheeseburger, fries… maybe a milkshake if they got one hiding back there,” Scheffler told reporters when asked what the first thing he’d be doing after winning the massive purse.
Scheffler then said that he doesn’t drink much but was craving a beer after shooting 16-under par at East Lake to defeat Viktor Hovland, who ended the tournament three shots behind.
Scheffler started the day trailing by three but started his comeback with a near-ace on the second hole.
“I had a beer for the first time in a long time. It just sounded good. Right when we got off the course, I went in there, you know, these guys are trying to get me to do media and all this stuff. And I was like, ‘Well, how much time do I really have?” Scheffler said.
“They’re like, ‘We got a couple minutes.’ And I was like, ‘All right, let me just go inside so I can get some air conditioning.’ And then there was an open bar right there. And I was like, ‘All right, I’m grabbing a beer.’ It tasted great.’”
Scheffler can now retreat with his wife, Meredith, after winning three times on the PGA Tour this season to boost his career win total to 22.
In a behind-the-scenes moment, Scheffler pointed to the camera and put his hat over the lens so he could relax in peace with his wife and two young sons, Bennett and Remy.
The world’s No. 1 player added that his wife was surprised that he went with a victory beer.
Scheffler went inside the clubhouse for air conditioning while media waited. “Yeah, it’s fun. I don’t really drink very often. My wife and my manager were like, ‘Wow, I haven’t seen you have a beer in a long time.’ And it’s like, ‘Yeah, well, season’s over now. I’m going to have a beer. Well-earned beer,’” Scheffler said.
Scheffler, 30, is now the all-time leader in total dollars won on the PGA Tour, having surpassed Tiger Woods with the win on Sunday.
Scheffler has now earned $130.4 million on the tour, edging out Woods at $121.1 million.
He also won the FedEx St. Jude Championship for $3.6 million to open the three-week playoffs earlier this month.
Scheffler now has a three weeks off before the Presidents Cup at Medinah on Sept. 22, which pits the Americans against the International team.
