This month we learned that the poor little rich kids of the Democratic Socialists of America, who live in homes owned by their parents and subsist on family largesse, proudly say they’re operating under the principle of noblesse oblige.
And that principle, we have been reliably told by leftists themselves, is racist.
“Everyone’s trying to dunk on me for being a progressive from a privileged background,” complained Grace Ryan, 25, an Ohio transplant who door-knocked around NYC for Brad Lander while living large off her family’s chocolate fortune.
“But like have y’all never heard of noblesse oblige?” she demanded.
“I have a moral obligation to use my advantages to help those who are struggling.”
Yes, Grace, we’ve all heard of noblesse oblige — the French came up with that concept two centuries ago.
Noblesse oblige means wealth brings with it the responsibility to protect the lower class, feed them, house them, clothe them, save them from their poverty.
But it’s carried racial implications for almost as long.
Rudyard Kipling called noblesse oblige the “White Man’s Burden,” assuming that those of other races are incapable of taking care of themselves.
It’s the precursor to the “white savior syndrome” of our own time, the subconscious belief among privileged white people that only they can rescue black people from their oppression.
Progressive leftism has told us, over and over again, that all such beliefs are absolutely, 100% racist.
It’s racist for the white and wealthy to claim they “really know what’s best for nonwhites,” Elie Mystal spat in 2018 as he blasted the media for praising the late George H.W. Bush for his “noblesse oblige.”
Around the same time, Amy Julia Becker condemned the noblesse oblige mindset for its “assumptions of superiority, the idea that the upper class has gifts to offer the rest of the world, and those poor, marginalized, underprivileged people are grateful recipients of this beneficence.”
The New York Times and The Washington Post opined that tipping was a vestige of slavery and noblesse oblige, and therefore should be abolished.
If traditional noblesse oblige is considered racist by the progressive class, how to make sense of the progressives’ own version?
Gustavo Gordillo believes in his noblesse oblige, meting out policy proposals for the betterment of the little people from his $1.5 million parent-owned home in Bed-Stuy.
Hasan Piker is worth millions and lectures the rest of us on how to live.
Abdul El-Sayed’s family has vast international land holdings, and Zohran Mamdani’s got that luxury compound in Uganda where he honeymooned.
All of them demand we eat the rich while using mommy and daddy’s wealth to bankroll their lifestyles.
And all of them are perfectly comfortable telling those who are less well off — black homeowners in the outer boroughs, Asian kids cramming to get into Stuyvesant, Amazon delivery drivers, bodega owners, minimum-wage workers — what kind of help they really need.
Even if that means disenfranchising us little people of our agency.
But while Ryan and her trust-fund ilk may claim they’re acting out of a “moral obligation” to “help” people, the truth is uglier.
Noblesse oblige protects the class system: It allows the wealthy to retain power by doling out a little cake to the masses.
The robber barons of the Gilded Age bestowed their largesse in the form of universities, hospitals, museums and great infrastructure; in return for those gifts, they kept their power over capital and politics.
But at least they did all that with their own money.
DSA rich kids want to take your money to fund their priorities: the end of private property, sex changes for kids, welfare benefits to illegal immigrants and the eradication of Israel.
They tell us we must be taxed to the back teeth for our own good, as they define it .
They complain that we vote against our own interests, and that only they know what’s best for us.
This is precisely the language used by the master to keep the servants in their place.
That the DSA is using old racist methods to keep working people down should be no surprise.
They’re building a new Democratic Party from within — one that’s content to cast off black voters for their new red-green alliance of immigrant and LGBTQ minorities.
We don’t see a black DSA leader because there isn’t one; it’s a movement that’s as anti-black as it is anti-American.
The nobles of America’s past used their own cash to give the country infrastructure and culture.
Today’s DSA nobility seeks to hold its own wealth while seizing ours — to fund the socialism they plan to impose on us, like it or not.
