All The Truth In My Lies is a Netflix romcom from Spain that puts two roommates who have romantic feelings for each other in a cramped RV on a long bachelorette trip for one of their friends. Will they finally act on those feelings or make lots of excuses not to?
Opening Shot: Shots of two people sleeping in their respective bedrooms. One has their clothes strewn on the floor, and the other has clothes neatly folded and arranged.
The Gist: Coco (Itziar Manero) and Marín (Daniel Ibáñez) have been roommates for a couple of years, and we see the scene where she moved in and told him straight out that she’s not into having relationships with roomies. But in those two years they’ve become really close, as we see when they race each other to the shower, as they do just about every morning. They even got each other fish-themed coffee mugs, which is why he calls her “Sardine” and she calls him “Anchovy.”
Over the two years they’ve been roomies, Marín has gotten together and broken up with Coco’s DJ friend Aroa (Lucía de la Fuente), and Coco has gotten together and been dumped by Gus (Ricardo Gómez), whom Coco’s friend group — Marín, Aroa, Blanca (Clara Sans), and Loren (Brays Efe) — calls “the poet.”
At a club where Aroa is DJing, Marín shows up and then leaves in order to avoid his ex, then Coco bolts when Gus shows up. That’s the dynamic that’s at play when Coco, Aroa, and Loren plan to surprise Blanca with a bachelorette trip. All of the friends — especially Aroa — want Marín there, but he has to work as a tour manager for a teenage singer who is playing the festival circuit.
The friends rent a cramped RV for the trip, which is a big surprise for Blanca, as is the flat tire they get when they go off the highway for another surprise. By the time they get to a campsite, everyone is exhausted. During this time, Coco thinks about Marín, and while he’s fending off the advances of his teenage singer, Marín thinks about Coco. What neither of them are going to anticipate is that an on-tour accident is going to free Marín up to join the RV trip, putting him and Coco in very close quarters.
What Shows Will It Remind You Of? All The Truth In My Lies, based on Elísabet Benavent’s novel, reminds us of romantic comedy series like Thank You, Next, mixed with a comedy like Adults, with a cast full of twentysomethings trying to figure out life.
Our Take: A show that’s structured like All The Truth In My Lies really, really leans on the chemistry of its cast. And this cast has amazing chemistry with each other. It’s a group that we like spending time around, and in this show’s story, we’re going to be spending time with them on an epic road trip in a small RV. Even the characters that have a bit more ego than others are likeable. We’re talking about Aroa, who simply can’t accept the fact that Marín doesn’t want to date/have sex with her anymore. She basically thinks that she’s too hot to be dumped, and her attempts top get Marín back are surprisingly charming.
But the central relationship is between Marín and Coco as they try to figure out their feelings for each other while on this trip. We can see from the first scenes, where they race each other to the shower, that these two have a vibe that’s more than just close friends and roommates, but for some reason each of them have put barriers in the way to the two of them getting together romantically.
That “will-they/won’t-they” dynamic always has the potential to be frustrating, but the fact that this is a limited series should ease those frustrations a bit. It’s pretty obvious that Coco and Marín’s “don’t poop where you eat” edict is what kept them apart when they first started living together, but now it’s the two of them afraid to mess up what has been a spectacularly successful friendship. What we hope is that these factors are explored in a mature, funny fashion as the two of them deal with camping out on this trip.
Performance Worth Watching: We’ll put both Daniel Ibáñez as Marín and Itziar Manero as Coco in this category, because sparks between the two of them together are off the charts.
Sex And Skin: We see some sex, but no skin in the first episode.
Parting Shot: Aroa screams with happiness when she hears that Marín will join them on the trip.
Sleeper Star: Brays Efe is really funny as Loren, who seems to be the only one who is brutally honest with the rest of the group.
Most Pilot-y Line: Coco busts Marín’s chops over a pop song he listens to while he cleans. It’s a big deal because he’s a self-admitted music snob. He’s also playing it on a boom box, which makes us wonder what year he thinks he’s in.
Our Call: STREAM IT. There is potential for the plot of All The Truth In My Lies to get annoying really quickly. But the cast is very charming and work well together, and that goes a long way towards making the show fun to watch.
