But as far as Yankees-Red Sox series go, the one that will begin Friday at the Stadium and continue through Sunday marks one of the most pivotal in recent memory. For so long, the discourse regarding the rivalry has centered around the idea that it had lost its luster. For so long in 2026, much of the chatter surrounding the Yankees revolved around how their season has tanked since the loss of Aaron Judge and how the Red Sox revived theirs — with a rivalry sweep at Fenway in late June serving as the inflection point.
For these four games, though, the Yankees can start to rewrite that script. They can start to shift the tenor of the rivalry. They can remind everyone that their showdowns against Boston remain the best in baseball — regardless of Yankees-Astros clashes threatening to unseat that across the past decade. Storylines and trends will collide with massive ramifications.
It will all start Friday with Cam Schlittler, the Massachusetts native who has become the protagonist of the series given his hometown connections and his rise as an ace. He said back in April that he had received “death threats” from Red Sox fans and that both he and his family had also received “some messages out there that are pretty unreal.” He exposed one of those online trolls back on social media in June.
