Add The New York Post on Google WASHINGTON — First son Barron Trump keeps a low profile inside a security bubble as he begins his third decade — an apparent response to the climate of growing political violence that includes a series of assassination attempts targeting his father, President Trump.
“He doesn’t go out,” one longtime Trumpworld figure told The Post of the 20-year-old Barron, who just concluded his sophomore year at New York University and has spent much of the summer with his mother, first lady Melania Trump, at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey.
“The kid’s pretty reclusive,” added another source.
While Donald Trump has survived at least three assassination attempts since July 2024 — being shot and wounded at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa.; stalked by a would-be assassin at his West Palm Beach, Fla. golf course in September 2024; and attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner that was attacked by a gunman this past April 25 — his youngest son has not escaped the notice of America’s enemies.
Iranian hardliners recently released a video entitled “Where to kill Barron Trump” and claimed to show the movements of the first son. It also put a $10 million bounty on his head. His mother also has been a target of Iranian hardliners, and Melania Trump was at the April correspondents’ dinner alongside the president.
Barron was also deeply affected by the September 2025 assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with whom he had become close.
“This is what happens when you go out there,” Barron told his father while breaking the news to the president, an account first reported by authors Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan in their recent book “Regime Change” and confirmed by The Post.
The Office of the First Lady requested privacy for the 20-year-old Barron, telling The Post that “in light of recent threats” the East Wing asked that “any details concerning his private life be excluded from all coverage.”
The first lady is known to be protective of her son.
In early 2022, Donald Trump was between White House terms, meaning Barron was set to lose his Secret Service detail when he turned 16 that March.
However, Melania Trump stepped in by ordering her office to contact the White House and request then-President Joe Biden authorize an extension of Barron’s detail — a request that was promptly granted, a former Biden administration official said.
The first lady hinted at her son’s shyness in her self-titled documentary chronicling the runup to Trump’s second inauguration in January 2025.
“I know Barron won’t go out. And I respect that,” Melania told Secret Service agents while discussing the possibility of the first family walking down Pennsylvania Avenue as part of the inaugural parade, which was ultimately moved indoors due to cold weather.
The constant security, while giving Barron the protection he needs, also heightens his awareness that threats are out there — even in ways as small as overhearing his agents talk about potential danger to a last-minute change in travel plans, experts say.
“Barron is probably a lot more aware and a lot more astute, and a lot more conscientious in terms of the real dangers,” Dr. Azita Sayan, a therapist who has not treated Barron but has dealt with adolescent trauma, told The Post.
“But reclusive doesn’t mean traumatized,” she added. “He’s protecting himself and making his friendships and his decisions privately rather than to have them be on display, which I think is developmentally healthy.”
Chelsea Clinton, who lived in the White House from age 12 until she left DC to attend college at Stanford University in the fall of 1997, recently told “The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Show” that she would deliberately stay indoors as often as possible to give her and her friends privacy and space.
“If we were in the White House,” Clinton noted, “Secret Service didn’t need to be on the same floor as we were studying or talking about boys or whatever we were doing.”
Barron already has his own spaces in each of his parents’ residences — including his own suite at Mar-a-Lago and his own floor at Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan. At the White House, his room features custom furniture built by the on-site carpentry shop to fit his 6’9″ frame.
Wherever he stays, Barron moves quickly inside when he arrives, avoiding public areas and heading straight to his private retreats.
“You don’t see him hanging around,” said one source in the first family’s orbit.
It’s a marked difference from his older siblings, who have chosen to have more public lives. Don Jr. and Eric are heavily involved in the Trump family business. Ivanka Trump is a regular presence on social media and a frequent podcast guest. All three — along with Tiffany Trump — regularly appear with their father at public events.
By all accounts, Barron is smart, polite and has dealt well with the public pressure of the Trump name and the larger-than-life personality of his father.
Whenever Barron’s education ends, signs point to him going into business rather than politics.
He’s already started a herbal energy drink business with friends from high school and invested in cryptocurrency, but has preferred to take a behind-the-scenes role in these ventures rather than following the example of his niece Kai, who markets and promotes her merchandise on social media.
“He doesn’t like the public eye so much, which I understand,” Kai said of Barron on Jake Paul’s podcast earlier this year.
The first son was last seen in public on July 19, when the soccer fan joined his parents to watch the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina from behind bulletproof glass at MetLife Stadium.
