Add The California Post on Google Parents and teachers are furious after a major California school district pulled funding for field trips for tens of thousands of elementary school children.
Fresno Unified School District has eliminated $2.2 million in centrally funded enrichment trips for students in transitional kindergarten through sixth grade for the upcoming school year, the district confirmed to YourCentralValley.
The decision affects roughly 40,000 students across the district and has sparked an angry backlash from families and educators who say field trips can provide children with experiences they may never otherwise have.
Among the trips now in jeopardy are visits to a local pumpkin patch, the Big Fresno Fair and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Perhaps most upsetting to families is the loss of sixth-grade camp, which teachers describe as a cherished rite of passage before students head off to middle school.
“The sixth-grade camp is one of the best memories these kids have,” one parent wrote on social media after saying they were told the camp had been canceled.
The controversy erupted after the Fresno Teachers Association posted on Facebook Sunday asking educators and parents whether they had heard that the district was scrapping field trips.
“No Field Trips?” the association wrote, asking families to share what their schools had been told and whether they supported the reported districtwide decision.
The post was quickly flooded with frustrated responses.
“The community deserves better!” one person wrote. “A bulk of the children cannot afford to go to places, even locally, because of cost. So please speak out FOR FIELD TRIPS for our children!”
Another commenter said they had been told field trips were canceled because of budget cuts and questioned why district leadership had not made a broader announcement explaining the decision.
Fresno Unified confirmed the cuts Monday, telling YourCentralValley that centrally funded TK-6 enrichment trips had been eliminated as part of its budget reductions.
Schools can still use their individual site budgets to pay for trips, the district said.
But teachers warn that approach could create a glaring divide between students at schools with more resources and those in communities with fewer.
“You’re going to have some school sites where they may be able to, and that’s going to be great because maybe they have access to those resources,” Fresno Teachers Association President, Manuel Bonilla, told the outlet.
“But … it’s not right for those students to not get the experiences that they would normally have.”
Teachers could also be left scrambling to organize trips and raise money themselves, adding yet another responsibility to their already lengthy workloads.
Bonilla said educators are particularly frustrated that the district did not directly communicate the decision to families. Instead, teachers were left to deliver the bad news to parents without necessarily having all the answers.
The union plans to hold a virtual community meeting in the coming weeks to hear from families and educators and discuss ways to persuade the district to reconsider.
Bonilla also pointed to another potential source of savings, administrative travel.
The union president said Fresno Unified spent $1.5 million on central-office administrative travel last year, an amount he argued could nearly cover the cost of restoring the field trips.
“That would almost cover everything that we would need for field trips,” Bonilla said.
For parents, however, the issue goes beyond a school outing.
They fear children from families who cannot afford private trips or expensive activities will be the ones who ultimately lose out.
And for many students, the cancellation means potentially losing beloved childhood experiences that many families consider a school tradition.
