**Spoilers for Outlander Season 8 Episode 1 “Soul of a Rebel,” now streaming on Starz**
Thanks to Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) — who gamely brought a handful of important 20th century texts back in time to Revolutionary War era North Carolina — Jamie finally knows that Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) first husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) looked exactly like his former tormentor, Captain “Black” Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies). One of the books the modern couple brought through the stones with them was none other than Soul of a Rebel, Frank Randall’s in-depth history of the Scottish connection to the Revolutionary War. Jamie gets to see the author’s picture on the book flap and immediately hears Captain Black Jack haunting his memories.
Naturally, Jamie wants to know why Claire never bothered to tell him of her first husband’s eerie resemblance to the early Outlander villain.
“It’s a pretty big secret or fact to keep,” Outlander star Sam Heughan told DECIDER. “[Claire] doesn’t even realize that she’s not told him, but it is quite a major plot point for Jamie in terms of who is this guy? He looks exactly the same and perhaps even sounds the same.”
Indeed, Claire seems surprised by the question, noting she hasn’t thought about the resemblance in years. Outlander executive producers Matthew B. Roberts and Maril Davis explained to DECIDER that Claire honestly didn’t even think the two men were all that similar (despite the fact they were both played by the same actor, Tobias Menzies).
“I think Black Jack was such a different character than Frank and in her mind, they were so separate that even though they looked so similar,” Maril Davis said. “I just think she separated the two.”
“Obviously, Jamie, he’s just looking at the fact, the picture,” Matthew B. Roberts said. “She has the years and years and years with Frank and knowing who he is and had seen him through all those years. So yeah, you know, it was apples and oranges to Claire as opposed to Jamie.”
Still, Heughan was quick to explain how for Jamie, this straight line of resemblance between Black Jack and Frank was important.
“It’s picking at old wounds,” Heughan said. “Something that Jamie I think has dealt with and moved on from, but in a way, you know, he can never escape the legacy that the Randalls have over him.”
While it might be obvious to Outlander fans how badly Black Jack’s actions would reverberate in Jamie’s memories, Heughan explained that Frank Randall is also something of a phantom who has dogged the Scotsman throughout the years.
“Certainly Frank has always been this figure that he can’t quite work out whether he’s malevolent or not,” Heughan said. “And I think, you know, with the introduction of the book, that’s something that Jamie is also trying to work out throughout the season… Whether or not Frank’s intentions are honorable.”
Outlander Season 8 Episode 1 “Soul of a Rebel” ends with Jamie asking Claire point blank if Frank was an honorable man. The reason? His book repeatedly mentions a James Fraser of Fraser’s Ridge and this historic figure’s outcome is not looking good.
Jamie tells Claire that Frank writes, “That war is coming to the backcountry.”
“He says there’ll be a battle in about a year’s time at a place called King’s Mountain… and that James Fraser dies in it.”
So is that how Jamie dies? In a battle he reads about in Frank Randall’s nonfiction book? Or is Frank Randall toying with the Frasers? Could he be warning them?
You’ll have to keep watching new episodes of Outlander‘s eighth and final season on Fridays on Starz to find out.
