Add The New York Post on Google WASHINGTON — President Trump took a lap of honor around IndyCar’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix 1.7-mile circuit near the US Capitol on Sunday to kick off the capstone event of DC summer festivities for America’s semiquincentennial.
During his lap in “the Beast” around the circuit, Air Force One flew over the course, capping off a series of flyovers to herald the big race.
“They’ve been trying to do it for 20 years,” Trump told Fox Sports before taking the lap. “It turned out to be, I think, bigger and better. And the weather is beautiful. You know, I was hearing about rain all week long. It’s going to rain. It’s going to rain. I said, ‘No it’s not.’ And this is as nice a day as I’ve seen in Washington in a long time.”
The president had arrived to cheers and greeted the drivers as well as top IndyCar officials before getting in “the Beast” presidential limo for the ceremonial lap for the first-ever IndyCar race in DC.
Trump is also set to waive the green flag for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix.
