Add The New York Post on Google Another major sporting event honoring the 250th anniversary of the United States takes place this afternoon.
Washington, D.C. is the latest American city to be transformed into a racing circuit ahead of today’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix, marking the first time the nation’s capital has held an IndyCar race.
The temporary track begins and ends at the base of Capitol Hill and loops around a number of Smithsonian institutions, including the Air and Space Museum and the National Gallery of Art.
Of course, President Trump and first lady Melania Trump will be in attendance, viewing the race from the viewing stands, but earlier this week, The Post revealed exclusively that the President’s motorcade will do an honorary lap around the course prior to the start of today’s event.
Alex Palou will start in pole position for the seventh time this season. Palou currently leads the IndyCar standings with 542 points; Kyle Kirkwood, who starts second today, is sending in standings with 409 points.
The IndyCar Freedom 250 Grand Prix is today, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. ET. Flyovers and pre-race coverage is expected to begin around 11:30 a.m. ET.
If you don’t have cable or a TV antenna, you’ll need a live TV streaming service to stream the Freedom 250 Grand Prix for free.
DIRECTV is our favorite service for watching sports live for free. Right now, you can take advantage of a five-day free trial before saving $30 on your first month. We recommend the Choice plan, which includes FOX as part of its 125+ channels.
The Freedom 250 will run for 147 laps, making up 250 total miles.
The street circuit, built around the National Mall, is a 1.7 mile course with seven turns.
