CDC issues safety alert for alfalfa sprouts as 55 sickened nationwide with these nasty ailments

The CDC issued a safety alert Friday linking an E. coli and Salmonella outbreak to alfalfa sprouts, with over 55 illnesses reported nationwide.

Two people in New York have fallen ill, according to the CDC.

Saiful52 – stock.adobe.com Officials recommend throwing away any alfalfa sprouts in your refrigerator and washing any items or surfaces that the vegetable may have contaminated with hot, soapy water.

Businesses have been instructed to not sell or serve affected alfalfa sprouts.

Early warning signs of E. coli and Salmonella infection include diarrhea and a fever higher than 102 Fahrenheit, diarrhea for more than two days that does not improve, extreme vomiting and severe dehydration.

Young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may experience more severe illness that requires medical treatment or hospitalization.
