Add The California Post on Google The sprawling California ranch and vineyard once owned by beloved “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek has fetched $16.9 million after hitting the auction block — going for nearly half of staggering $33 million price tag it carried when it hit the market last year.
Known as Windfall Farms, the 724-acre mega-estate in the rolling hills of Paso Robles went to the highest bidder during Monterey Car Week last week after languishing on the market. The sale is now pending, according to Concierge Auctions, which sold the estate in partnership with Sotheby’s International Realty.
The TV titan, who died in November 2020 at age 80, used the compound as a thoroughbred horse breeding haven. The ranch retains its equestrian glory, anchored by a 6.5-furlong racetrack, large paddocks and enough open turf for a regulation polo field. It also houses an industrial-grade, three-bay machine shop outfitted with heavy-duty hydraulic lift, 480V three-phase power, and natural gas lines.
The main house is an expansive, 10,000-square-foot primary residence with eight bedrooms, offices, conference rooms, large kitchen, dining and living areas, a media room, 12 bathrooms, and two separate manager residences.
The property is also a wine country goldmine, with 387 acres of planted wine grapes, which operates as a “positive cash flow business in production today,” according to the listing, through contracts with other wineries.
A whopping seven wells pumping out more than 7,000 gallons per minute keep the dirt green, plus the Huero Huero Creek slices through the grounds. With 76 approved, buildable 10-acre lots, it’s also a developer’s dream.
Hundreds of acres of rolling hills, open pasture, and productive farmland help distinguish the estate from the typical celebrity home.
The location is also a draw for buyers, since Paso Robles has emerged as one of California’s fastest-growing wine destinations over the past two decades, with affluent buyers drawn to the region’s scenic landscapes and acclaimed vineyards. The estate is managed by agricultural giant Limoneira, and is situated near wine-country legends like Justin and Halter Ranch.
Windfall Farms was owned by Trebek for 37 years, until he and several other investors sold it to its now former owners for $1.6 million in 2001 to Barry and Donna Goldfarb. Since, they have transformed it from a working winery into a sprawling family retreat, adding multiple structures.
