**Spoilers for Outlander Season 8 Episode 1 “Soul of a Rebel,” now streaming on Starz**

Outlander fans know that Season 7 Part 2 ended with the stunning revelation that Jamie and Claire’s firstborn child, Faith, may have actually survived infancy, only to die tragically after giving birth to Jane (Silvia Presente) and Fanny Pocock (Florrie Mae Wilkinson). The Starz show doesn’t pick up right where Season 7 left off, but in the middle of a brand new adventure where Jamie and Claire are laying in weight for a shady smuggler named Vasquez (Miguel Álvarez).

“We’re thrust into the scene and we’re in the midst of this conversation,” Sam Heughan told DECIDER. “It was one of the first things we shot and for us, ourselves, it was quite jarring being into this storyline of Jamie and Claire on this mission to find out more about what happened to Faith.”

Jamie and Claire have lured Vasquez to a shadowy location with the promise of trading whiskey. However, Jamie soon claims he wants to expand his trade into human trafficking. He gets Vasquez to open up about how he raided the boat young Jane and Fanny traveled to America on. The Spaniard brags about how the Captain, Pocock, was foolish enough to bring his family with him. Pocock was willing to give the smuggler his cargo, but not his family, so Vasquez murdered him.

Vasquez then describes in disgusting, graphic detail how he abducted a young Fanny knowing she was too young for the sex trade, but would eventually fetch a massive sum for her beauty. He sexually assaulted a tween Jane, who was obviously still a virgin. He then reveals his regret at not getting to assault their beautiful mother, who had “wild hair” and “velvet skin.” She turned “rabid” when he touched the girls, clawing at him. So he threw her overboard because only “death would silence her.”

At this, Claire erupts. She emerges from the corner with a knife and stabs Vasquez to death. Jamie quickly dispatches with Vasquez’s man. The couple leaves. Claire’s one regret? Killing him too quickly.

When DECIDER caught up with Caitrona Balfe recently, she shared that while she “can’t exactly condone” Claire’s violence, she “can maybe understand.”

“I think for Claire and for Jamie, I mean, you never get over the loss of a child and finding out that she lived or she might have lived and that they missed out on that life? I mean, that’s a whole other pain and that’s a whole other set of grief to go through,” Balfe said. “So when they find out, especially then what happened to her — if this really is her — it was a really horrific thing. And I think Claire does something that’s very shocking.”

Sam Heughan agreed. “Claire’s reaction, of course, is quite violent. It’s not how she would normally act, I think, but you can see the emotion that’s in her and the passion that’s there.”

“I think Jamie’s shocked by it, but also equally as driven and as deadly in their conviction in finding out the truth about what happened,” Heughan said.

Interestingly, the actors playing Jamie and Claire were as taken aback by Outlander Season 7’s big Faith reveal as the fandom was.

“I didn’t know where that was going at all,” Balfe said. “We didn’t have those last two episodes of Season 7 until very, very late. Right before we were going to film. So that was sort of a big reveal to us.”

Balfe then shared that Outlander’s final season also kept her and Heughan equally on their toes. For the first time ever, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts didn’t give the stars and EPs a breakdown of the whole season before shooting began.

“I think Matt, because he had this really intense responsibility of finishing a show that everyone has an opinion on, was keeping his cards very close to his chest and he wasn’t giving us an overview of the season,” she said. “So even as we were going into the season, we started off with two scripts and then we were sort of going along like script by script. So it was sort of like a surprise about where all that story was going to go, too.”

There are 10 episodes in total in the eighth and final season of Outlander, meaning that there’s no telling where Claire and Jamie’s story will go next. Especially after that action-packed cold open.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s a strong start for them both, isn’t it?” Heughan said, before joking about Claire’s violent streak. “Yeah. I think her body count is getting higher than Jamie’s, for sure.”

Outlander Season 8 Episode 1 “Soul of a Rebel” is now streaming on Starz.
