Ryan McMahon joins crowded Yankees IL ahead of key Blue Jays series

Add The New York Post on Google Ryan McMahon, who has been out since exiting Wednesday’s game in Baltimore early, was placed on the IL with a left thumb sprain, the Yankees announced before beginning a series with the Blue Jays in The Bronx on Friday.

The Yankees had hoped the third baseman would avoid missing significant time after initial test results, following the injury sustained sliding into second base, were encouraging.

The Yankees called up another righty-hitting infielder to replace McMahon — but not Anthony Volpe. It was Max Schuemann instead as Volpe gets an extended look at second base at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
