That inclination always needs to be tempered with a companion thought and a historical reminder: “Yeah, what I saw in the heat of the summer sure cooled off once the real season settled in.’’
Dispatches from across the NFL are filled with laudatory analysis for this rookie lighting it up in training camp and that rookie looking frisky in a preseason game. First-round picks are the real deal. Later-round picks are, potentially, surprise contributors. Sometimes, the hype is real. Usually, a draft class takes time to marinate into something appetizing.
So, we tread lightly with a mid-August assessment of the top of the Giants’ 2026 draft class. Still, there is no need to run the entire race under the caution flag. It is not too bold to anticipate that the top four players will all be significant contributors in their first season.
