Giants to host 2028 MLB All-Star Game despite Summer Olympics controversy

Add The California Post on Google With the 2028 Summer Olympics set to take place in Los Angeles, Major League Baseball announced the 2028 MLB-All Star Game will be taking place a few hours north at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

The news of the Midsummer Classic returning to San Francisco for the first time since 2007 comes in the midst of an ongoing dispute between MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, the MLB Players Association, and officials of the 2028 Olympics.

In July, The Post reported that their have been disagreements between the three sides over the specifics of baseball taking part in the Games.

The league is looking to mandate participation that would place players who avoid playing in the Games on the restricted list — without pay — from July 12 to Aug. 3, per ESPN.

To no one’s surprise, the MLBPA strongly objects to that notion.

The Summer Olympics will begin on July 14, 2028, with the festivities of the All-Star Game set to take place between July 10, 2028 through July 12, 2028.

The timeframe for the All-Star Game ending lays perfectly into the Olympics, with travel being beneficial for the players participating, as it is about an hour to fly from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

In March, The Post reported that Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper had expressed his desire for MLB players to participate in the Olympics, as he believes it will be a great way to grow the game of baseball.

“I’m hoping that next CBA agreement can happen where teams and players can come to an agreement on taking that two-week break, especially since it’s our home country,” Harper said.

As Manfred, the MLB Players Association and officials of the Summer Olympics must come to an agreement soon, it comes just before a looming MLB lockout that may take place after this season.

The last time the game was held at Oracle Park, which was known as AT&T Park at the time, it was Barry Bonds’ 14th and final appearance in the game. The 7-time National League MVP closed out a 22-year career.

“With its passionate fanbase, world-class ballpark, and rich baseball history, San Francisco will be an outstanding host for All-Star Week, which culminates in one of Major League Baseball’s best traditions, the Midsummer Classic,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “We look forward to bringing the excitement of All-Star Week and the celebration of baseball to the Bay Area.”
