Add The New York Post on Google Jacy Maranhao, a captain and defender with the Coritiba club in Brazil’s top league said he “got carried away” when he leaped through a trap door and injured his ankle during a goal celebration in Coritiba’s 2-1 league win against Chapecoense Saturday.
“I scored the goal and wanted to celebrate with my wife because she’s pregnant,” Maranhao, 29, said according to quotes by Brazilian outlet Globo.
“But then I remembered it was my first goal at Couto Pereira stadium, and I also wanted to celebrate with the fans, but I hadn’t remembered there was a moat there.
“When I jumped, you know when you dream you’re falling from a building? That’s what it was like.”
Maranhao leaped over the pitch perimeter and fell down an opening to stairs and a tunnel that access the locker rooms at Estadio Couto Pereir.
Maranhao played the rest of the half, despite injuring his foot, and was subbed out after the break.
“I twisted my foot there. It’s a bit sore, but I’m fine,” he said, per local media. “Centre-backs hardly ever score goals. So when you do score … I just got carried away.”
“At first it was more of a scare than anything else,” wrote on social media after his fall, according to the Jamaica Observer.
“During the match my foot was quite painful and I couldn’t really put weight on it, but today I’m feeling much better and recovering well.”
In 2014, striker Joel fell down the same opening after scoring in a 3-1 victory against Sao Paulo.
