The youngest player on the field on Old-Timers’ Day fit in. And that was about more than just Aug. 8, 2026. Lombard’s traits would connect with those old-time Yankees — the ease, maturity and on-field intellect with which he plays.
This is what I would be comfortable stating about Lombard after four games: He is a baseball player. He does not look out of place; he looks like a major leaguer. So far, an outstanding one. The game at the highest level is not too fast for him, and on defense he can make 104.8 mph to the backhand off Drake Baldwin’s bat look slow, as he did to open Saturday’s game — “Played it like he was half asleep,” in Gerrit Cole’s words.
