Prospective members to vie for 982 of 1,500 seats in November 22 poll before body picks city’s next leader
2-MIN READ2-MIN ListenConnor MycroftPublished: 4:35pm, 7 Aug 2026Nominations for Hong Kong’s powerful Election Committee will take place in October, with the vote for 982 seats of the 1,500-member body – which picks the city’s chief executive and some of the legislative candidates – taking place a month later.
A government spokesman said Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu had specified November 22 as the polling date for the committee’s subsector ordinary elections and that the relevant notice had been gazetted on Friday.
The spokesman added that the nomination period would run from October 7 to 20, and that the chief electoral officer would publish “in due course” a notice specifying the period within which nomination forms were to be submitted.
“The government will continue to work closely with the Electoral Affairs Commission to actively carry out preparatory work, with a view to ensuring that the elections will be conducted smoothly in an open, honest, fair, safe and orderly manner, with arrangements that are efficient and user-friendly,” he said.
The date of the election was earlier announced by the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau in a paper submitted to the Legislative Council in July.
Hong Kong’s Election Committee is composed of 1,500 members from five sectors comprising 40 subsectors. The coming vote will elect 982 members to the committee for a five-year term running from February 2027 to January 2032.
