49ers face jarring number of injuries ahead of season

Add The California Post on Google Bodies appear to be dropping like flies as the San Francisco 49ers ended Wednesday’s practice short of 20 players from their 90-man roster.

Notable players who didn’t practice include Nick Bosa (soreness), Dre Greenlaw (soreness), Kyle Juszcyk (finger), Mike Evans (quad), De’Zhaun Stribling (hamstring), Christian Kirk (calf) and Malik Mustapha (hamstring).

While Bosa and Greenlaw were dealing with soreness, a majority of the wide receiver room is already sidelined by various injuries. Ricky Pearsall is set to undergo a season-ending surgery, depleting an already thin group for San Francisco.

Moreover, defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu went off the field Wednesday with an apparent ankle issue during training camp. The jarring number of injuries could force the 49ers to cancel their joint practice with the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 11 if the team doesn’t have enough healthy bodies to participate.

This is a daunting sign for the 49ers, a team that was likewise decimated by injuries last season. Three of San Francisco’s best players (Bosa, Fred Warner and George Kittle) sustained season-ending injuries in 2025. Brock Purdy dealt with toe issues that sidelined him for parts of the year and affected his performance on the field.

Several other 49ers players were sidelined throughout the campaign with the squad falling short in the NFC Divisional Round to eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

It’s been a rollercoaster training camp for the 49ers as the news of Kyle Shanahan’s horrific car accident was announced by the team the same weekend San Francisco kicked off its first practice of the summer.

Now, the 49ers are already dealing with an overwehlming amount of injuries just over a month before the NFL season begins. The concerning trend certainly doesn’t bode well for SF’s chances of making a deep playoff run in 2026.
