Visitors looking for thrills at a popular boardwalk got more than they bargained for after a ride unexpectedly ground to a halt, forcing passengers to wait in a situation few would want to find themselves in.

Video shared on Instagram appears to show the Wipe Out ride at the Ocean City Boardwalk stopped mid-cycle with riders suspended upside down as concerned spectators gathered below.

In the clip, women can be heard yelling as one bystander tries to reassure those trapped on the ride.

"You're alright honey! You're alright!" one person can be heard shouting.

The video quickly sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many viewers expressing relief that the ride's safety restraints appeared to do their job despite the frightening ordeal.

"On a positive note: whoever designed the safety harnesses should get a MASSIVE raise," one Instagram user wrote.

Others said the incident reminded them of similar experiences.

"My cousins were stuck on a ride in Ocean City 20 years ago. Still happening," another commenter wrote.

Some viewers tried to lighten the mood, with one writing, "You are in fact not alright honey, you're upside down for way longer than you should be."

It was not immediately clear what caused the apparent malfunction, how long riders remained suspended, or whether anyone was injured.
