Malibu’s iconic Point Dume Beach closed indefinitely due to ‘severe’ erosion

“There is currently no estimated reopening date,” the City of Malibu said.

A Malibu beach has been shut down indefinitely after powerful surf and high tides triggered major coastal erosion. The closure affects Westward Beach Road beyond the pay gate, including the entrance to Point Dume Beach. Officials also say the erosion damaged a water line serving three beach restrooms, forcing those facilities to close. Temporary portable toilets and hand-washing stations have been placed nearby for visitors.

The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors is urging the public to stay out of closed areas.

“Visitors are reminded not to cross safety cones, caution tape, or barriers,” the department said in a statement.

“The bluff edge is unstable, with erosion creating drop-offs of up to eight feet in some locations. Entering closed areas could result in serious injury.”

The latest erosion comes just days after officials reported additional coastal damage near oceanfront homes destroyed in the January 2025 Palisades Fire, highlighting the ongoing impacts of severe weather and a fragile coastline.

Officials are asking beachgoers to avoid restricted areas until it is safe to reopen.
