Marcy Kaptur is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries after a car crash in Toledo, Ohio, on Sunday, the Democratic US representative’s office said.

Kaptur, 80, was a passenger in the vehicle and on her way to church, her office said. Toledo police did not respond to ‌a request from Reuters for ‌comment.

But the department told local news ‌outlets that officers responded to a two-vehicle crash shortly before 11am local time. Police described it as a hit-and-run, also sometimes known as a “hit-skip” incident, and was taken to the hospital, multiple outlets reported.

Kaptur represents Ohio’s ninth congressional district and has been in the US House of Representatives for 43 years.

“She is ‌active, alert, and being treated for non-life-threatening injuries,” Kaptur’s office said in a statement.

She is the longest-serving female lawmaker in the history of the chamber, according to House records. She is seeking re-election in the ‌fall against Derek Merrin, a Republican former member of the Ohio legislature.

The district includes parts of Toledo and stretches across north-western Ohio along the southern shore of Lake Erie. She was born in Toledo and before becoming an elected politician herself she worked in urban planning and advised Jimmy Carter’s administration.
