Participant feared drowned after entering water minutes after amber rainstorm warning issued

Police told the South China Morning Post that they received a report at 7.57am on Sunday that a male participant of the 2026 Summer Triathlon Challenge at the Tai Mei Tuk Water Sports Centre in Tai Po had entered the water during the swimming segment of the race but failed to resurface.
Marine police searched the area while Fire Services Department divers also entered the water to look for him.
The man went into water two minutes after the Hong Kong Observatory issued the amber rainstorm warning at 6.10am, the lowest of the three-tier system, and cautioned of more squally thunderstorms with frequent lightning on Sunday morning.
The forecaster said that more than 30mm of rain was recorded in most parts of the city, with some areas exceeding 50mm.
