Yet his “alarmist claims” of “imminent apocalypse” were always “wildly inaccurate.” Climate change is real, but with no real threat of a “terminal risk to humanity.” “Rational, commonsense measures” can “mitigate the negative consequences” of warming, including the “expansion” of “wind, solar, geothermal, and nuclear power.” “Climate fundamentalists” may shrug at “progress,” the world’s made “great strides” in emission reduction since 2006. “Anthropogenic climate change is quite real,” but Al Gore’s “fundamentalist successors” had best note how their obstinacy has “contributed to their own discredit.”
Claims in 2003 that “suspensions and expulsions” were “disproportionately” targeting students with disabilities and boys from Black and Latino communities, effectively pushing them “into the justice system” (called “the “school-to-prison pipeline”) changed “how schools discipline children”— with terrible results, explain Jennifer Weber & Carolyn D. Gorman at City Journal. Districts began “reducing suspensions and replacing them with mental health-oriented approaches like ‘restorative justice,’ social-emotional learning, and ‘trauma-informed’ practices” — of which only encourages “acting out.” No! Effective discipline that’s tied to “behavior is the only approach that keeps a student in school engaged — and engagement is what keeps him out of the justice system.” The best way to keep kids out of prison “is a school that teaches rules, expectations, and how to belong.”
The Democratic National Committee just “set up a challenge for the DSA” with its schedule of the first six 2028 primaries, notes Jim Geraghty at The Washington Post: South Carolina’s black voters were key to Joe Biden fending off Bernie Sanders in 2020; Virginia isn’t “natural territory for a socialist upstart” and New Mexico “hasn’t been particularly fertile territory for the DSA.” For all far lefty Abdul El-Sayed’s hopes in Michigan this month, Biden also beat Sanders in that 2020 primary. Nevada and New Hampshire look “more friendly” for socialist candidates; both went to Bernie in 2020, though that’s no guarantee for a “DSA-affiliated candidate” like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. It’s not “impossible for a socialist candidate to win the 2028 Democratic nomination,” but the DNC “stacked the deck in favor of an establishment nominee.”
At The Hill, Mark Toth & Jonathan Sweet reiterate Gen. David Petraeus’ argument “that Ukraine’s use of unmanned aerial vehicles represents ‘a whole new concept of warfare.’” The melding of “surveillance, targeting and strike capabilities into a unified platform,” plus “the advent of artificial intelligence,” looks to further revolutionize “how modern warfare is fought.” Petraeus is also “worried about the US military’s capacity to defend against drones,” especially autonomous “drone swarms.” Congress needs a sense of urgency to address “AI-driven drone warfare and the need for more defensive assets to defend U.S. fixed positions against them.” The same applies to “underwater and space-based drones.” Beware: “The nature of the war will soon get away from us if we don’t adapt quickly.”
An Islamist drove his vehicle into last weekend’s Berlin Pride parade, “killing a woman and injuring 29 others,” but activists are “looking for someone else to blame,” laments Seán Atkinson at Spiked. After the attack, “an Antifa flag lying soaked in blood” embodied the “irony”: The very people “who wave that flag,” have “spent years dismissing concerns about Islamism — and its violent homophobia.” They’ve even blamed “white conservatives” and “gender-critical feminists” for similar attacks. Stop treating gays as “mascots . . . brought out for endorsement season”: “If a homophobic attack is motivated by Islamism, say so.”
