Alex de Minaur, the top seed in the 32-player field and the current World No. 6, will take on former World No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was last seen defeating Raphael Collignon in the final of ATP Gstaad on July 19.
The odds for this clash are razor-thin, with de Minaur sitting as just a -136 favorite over a player who is 45 places below him in the rankings.
Few players in professional tennis are more polarizing than Tsitsipas. The Greek has all the talent in the world and can be unplayable if his serve is working, but he falls off the boil way too often.
One minute Tsitsipas could look like Roger Federer, but the next thing you know he is smashing his racquet and losing a match he should have easily won.
You’d think a mercurial player like Tsitsipas would be easy pickings for a consistent opponent like de Minaur, but oddly the opposite is true.
The two 27-year-olds have met 13 times in their careers. The Greek has won 12 of them. It’s no wonder that the betting market is skeptical of the Aussie’s chances under the lights in D.C. on Tuesday.

In fact, Tsitsipas and de Minaur have only faced off once since 2024, with the former taking his 12th win off the latter in Miami back in March. That was arguably Tsitsipas’ most notable win until he triumphed over Collignon, but he followed it up with three losses on the spin, and saw his ranking dip to 80 in the process.
Perhaps Tsitsipas just has de Minaur’s number, but the odds on the Greek are just too short. For a boom-or-bust player, and that’s what Tsitsipas is right now, you’d want a much higher price against the World No. 6, no matter the history between them.
