Add The California Post on Google A California man’s dream of sailing solo across the Pacific Ocean quickly turned into a disaster after the sailboat’s mast snapped in half.
Kai Sato, 39, started his journey from the Catalina Islands on June 7 but the boat’s condition worsened in just two weeks into the journey –– leaving him fighting for life.
“I cried for a whole week, just drifting south, like miserable,” Soto told Hawaii News Now.He said he felt like a “like a sitting duck, just getting taken south by the current going way off course.”
In an attempt to get to the shore, he tried to turn on the motor but the situation became worse quickly as he ran out of gas.
After spending five days in the boat without a direction, he began repairing his boat with PVC pipes and kayak paddles. It took him nearly a month to get back into the shipping lane from California to Hawaii.
