Add The New York Post on Google New York State Attorney General Letitia James hammers conservative outfits over paperwork errors, but look how kind she is when the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a political ally, flouts state charity and elections law.
CAIR and related entity CAIR Action jumped into New York Democratic primaries in June to endorse and fundraise for a host of anti-Zionist candidates, including the victorious Darieliza Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander and Claire Valdez.
Setting aside CAIR’s links to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, this would be normal political activity — except that CAIR Action NY, though registered federally as a 501(c)(4), never registered with the New York Charities Bureau, as required for any entity soliciting such funds in New York state.
A new report from the Intelligent Advocacy Network details scrupulously how CAIR Action — which has been barred from soliciting in California and fined for unlicensed solicitation in DC — ignored New York law.
Yet AG James, whose core duties include enforcing these laws, has had nothing to say on the matter.
Hmm: Her office routinely celebrates the work of CAIR, takes action against groups investigating CAIR and even forces pro-Israel groups that annoy CAIR out of business.
James has also proven herself to be a stickler when it comes to the jots and tittles of the filings of conservatives, for example striving to shut down the small anti-immigration website VDare, which hasn’t operated in New York for years, over supposed “misappropriation” of funds for outlays that donors were well aware of.
Not to mention her prosecutorial jihad against Donald Trump and the privately held Trump Organization over obscure filings in a Deutsche Bank loan that was repaid in full.
For all James’ oaths to uphold the laws, her approach to these issues is pure politics.
But if you’re an ally, even one linked to global terror, you can get away with anything.
