It’s been seven years since the town was wowed by Israeli-American director Alma Har’el‘s feature debut, “Honey Boy,” which was written by and starred Shia LaBeouf. Following the 2019 film’s strong critical acclaim and festival buzz, anticipation quickly built over what the 50-year-old director planned to do next.
Now, after a relatively quiet stint, Page Six Hollywood has learned that Har’el has settled on her next project: a feature film called “Wet.”
Little is known about the story other than that it is an original script that one knowledgeable source described as a family drama in the vein of HBO’s “Succession” and the 2022 Oscar nominated film, “Triangle of Sadness.”
According to several sources, Academy Award-winner Javier Bardem is circling the project and Fifth Season is close to signing on as a producer and financier, although sources say no deals have been closed. Har’el had previously been adapting the 1980 dystopian science-fiction novel “Mockingbird” by Walter Tevis, but that project was put in turnaround earlier this year at Searchlight, propelling “Wet” to Har’el’s pole position.
Some might see the pairing of Bardem — one of the industry’s more outspoken critics of Israel’s foreign policies — and Tel Aviv-born Har’el as odd, but sources say they have found much common creative ground. WME, which represents both Har’el and Bardem, declined to comment.
